Bench Scales

BS Single Point Platform Scale

The BS single load cell platform scale is a fully electronic, double-chassis platform scale in which the whole deck is mounted on one central load cell. The series of six models runs from a 30/60 kg bench version to a 600/1500 kg model with a 120 × 120 cm platform, and every model weighs in two ranges. It suits shipping and packing benches, checks beside production lines, warehouses and trade counters.

Six models, one logic: reading the series

In the BS series each model is defined by a capacity pair, an interval pair and two or three platform sizes. Read these three together and the right model usually suggests itself:

  • 30/60 kg, 10/20 g, 35 × 40 or 40 × 50 cm: small cartons, samples, parts and recipe weighing. This model has the finest interval in the series.
  • 60/150 kg, 20/50 g, 35 × 40 cm to 50 × 60 cm: courier benches, e-commerce parcels and medium-sized cartons.
  • 150/300 kg, 50/100 g, 50 × 60 cm to 70 × 80 cm: sacks, drums, crates and wholesale sales.
  • 300/600 kg, 100/200 g, 60 × 80 cm to 80 × 90 cm: heavy sacks, barrels and crate weighing inside the warehouse.
  • 600/1000 kg and 600/1500 kg, 200/500 g, 90 × 110 or 120 × 120 cm: heavy loads on the floor, placed by hand or in a controlled way.

The first figure in the capacity pair is the limit of the lower range. On the 60/150 kg model, for example, parcels up to 60 kg are read in 20 g steps and those between 60 kg and 150 kg in 50 g steps. Since most parcels on a courier bench weigh between a few kilograms and a few tens of kilograms, almost all of them are weighed in the fine range in this use.

BS or a four-cell floor scale?

The upper BS models and the lower CP and TP models in the heavy-duty group come close to each other in capacity. The choice depends less on capacity than on how the load arrives and how big the platform must be.

The BS is designed for work where an operator sets each item down by hand or lowers it from a hand trolley in a controlled way. With its simple single-cell construction it is easy to install, practical to move and fits comfortably on or just in front of a bench. The platform tops out at 120 × 120 cm, the size offered on the two largest models.

If loads are set down by forklift, pallets will be wheeled onto the platform on a pallet truck, or a platform larger than 120 × 120 cm is needed, a four-cell floor scale suits the job better. As a rough rule: if a person can lift the item into place or brings it on a hand trolley, think BS; if a forklift or pallet truck comes in, think CP, TP or U-type.

Checkweighing and piece counting on the packing line

The checkweighing function on the BS indicator works as a direct quality tool on hand-packing lines. The operator sets a lower and an upper limit around the target weight. If a pack placed on the platform falls below the band the display shows LO, within it OK and above it HI, with a buzzer. For 25 kg sacks, for example, setting a band of 24.90–25.15 kg means an under-filled sack is noticed before the operator closes it.

For piece counting, the unit weight is taught to the indicator: a few parts are weighed as a sample, and once the full box is placed the indicator gives the count. For items that take time to count one by one, such as screws, seals, small castings or packaging materials, it cuts a stock count from minutes to seconds. How reliable the count is depends on the parts being close in weight and on weighing a large enough sample.

Daily use and indicator details

The 24-bit analogue-to-digital converter in the indicator turns the signal from the single cell into a digital value at high resolution. Power-on zero tracking takes the empty platform as zero each time the scale is switched on; small drifts that build up during the day are cleared with manual zeroing. Tare can be keyed in, taken automatically or taken with a key while the container is on the platform.

Power can come from the internal rechargeable battery or a 220 V supply. Auto power-off and power protection stop the battery running down when the scale is idle. Units can be switched between kilograms, pounds and litres; the RS 232 link is used to print tickets and labels and send weighing records to a computer. The platform has a double chassis and an electrostatic oven-baked finish; its overload-resistant design is intended to protect the cell if a load above capacity is put on by mistake.

Key features

Single load cell, double chassis

The single central cell measures the whole load; the double-chassis platform passes the load to it without bending.

Intervals down to 10 g

The 30/60 kg model reads in 10 g steps in its lower range; every model in the series offers finer resolution in the lower range.

Platforms from 35 × 40 cm to 120 × 120 cm

From small bench-top decks to a wide floor platform, each capacity comes with more than one size option.

HI-OK-LO checkweighing

It gives a visual and audible alert against the lower and upper limits you set, showing under- or over-filling at once.

Piece counting and unit switching

It counts items whose unit weight has been entered and can show the result in kilograms, pounds or litres.

Battery use and RS 232

The built-in rechargeable battery frees it from the socket; RS 232 connects it to a printer and computer.

Frequently asked questions

Which BS model should I choose for a courier bench?

If most parcels are under 60 kg, the 60/150 kg model is a good starting point; in that range it reads in 20 g steps. Where bench space is tight a 35 × 40 cm platform is preferred, for large cartons 50 × 60 cm. Just tell us the size of your largest carton.

What is the difference between the 600/1000 kg and 600/1500 kg models?

Both come in the same platform sizes and with the same intervals: 200 g up to 600 kg and 500 g above. The difference is the upper limit; if loads over 1,000 kg are weighed from time to time, the 600/1500 kg model is chosen.

Can I weigh pallets on the BS?

On the models with a 120 × 120 cm platform, a pallet can be weighed if it is lowered onto the deck in a controlled way. If pallets are regularly dropped by forklift or wheeled on by pallet truck, however, a four-cell floor scale is better suited to that loading.

How are the checkweighing limits set?

The limits are entered in the indicator according to the target weight and acceptable deviation. The lower limit catches under-filling and the upper limit needless over-filling; we suggest setting the band from your product’s declared weight and filling accuracy.

Does the scale work without being plugged in?

Yes. Its internal rechargeable battery keeps it going, and auto power-off saves energy. On fixed benches, continuous use on 220 V mains is also possible.

Can the platform size differ from those listed?

The BS can also be made in other sizes and capacities. With a single cell, however, the effect of off-centre loading grows as the platform gets bigger, so the size is assessed together with the limits of the chosen cell.
