What Is an IP68 Load Cell and Why Does It Matter for Scales?

The load cell is one of the core elements of accurate weighing. Also called a load sensor, it is the main measuring component that converts the weight placed on it into an electronic signal. The precision and service life of a scale therefore depend directly on the load cell technology it uses.

The IP rating describes how well a device is protected against dust and water. IP68 means the load cell is dust-tight and, under the stated conditions, protected against water. This level of protection is a clear advantage on livestock farms, in industrial plants, outdoors and in humid working areas.

On livestock scales the platform can be in contact with mud, water, manure and heavy dirt. Standard equipment may lose performance over time in these conditions. With IP68 load cells, the risk of outside elements reaching the electronic measuring parts is reduced, which means more stable readings and less maintenance.

Capacity alone is not enough when choosing a scale; the physical conditions of the site must be assessed as well. For outdoor installations, wash-down floors or very humid sites, choosing IP68 load cells is an important reliability criterion.

Meram designs weighing solutions around site conditions to meet the need for reliable, long-lasting measurement.
